Jim McCarthy commenced practice in McKinnon Road in July 1974 as a partner in the practice of Dunstan & Raftis.  McCarthy and Associates commenced as a separate practice in November 1982, initially in Jasper Road, and was moved to our current location in 1988.

During Jim's 35 years of practice in this location, the delivery and nature of legal services has changed radically. What was previously a locally concentrated practice has developed into a much broader commercial and property development based practice. Our clients are now not only from all over Australia but even include a number of offshore based clients engaging in business or investments in Australia.  The types of clients we service range in size from ASX listed and CBD based entities to local businesses and residents.

The stability of our location and staff has meant that we have been able to deliver a consistently high quality of service through the accumulation and transfer of knowledge and experience from and to our clients.  Many of our clients are into the second generation of utilizing our services.

	James McCarthy Jim was admitted to practice in 1972. He became an Accredited Business Law Specialist in 1992. He is the past chair of the Business Law Advisory committee at the Law Institute of Victoria, which is responsible for setting the standards and assessment for practitioners seeking accreditation as specialists in Business Law in Victoria. Jim has a broad experience in practice and community service. Jim’s philosophy has always been that the law should serve his clients. This has allowed him to build a reputation for fearless, innovative and original advice with a particular capacity for solving difficult problems with creative solutions. Jim has acted for a broad range of clients including Australand, Walker Corporation, Multiplex, Piccolo Corporation, Oliver Hume, The Editors Society of Victoria, Shannons Insurance and a wide variety of individual enterprises. Jim has a proven track record in all aspects of property development, business sales and acquisitions, personal asset protection and succession, and general business advice.
